Overview

The Gokyo Chola Pass Everest Base Camp Trek is considered one of the most thrilling and adventurous trekking routes in the Everest region. At times, it is also referred to as the Everest Circuit trek. This challenging journey takes you through the high-altitude Cho-La Pass, situated at 5330 meters above sea level, en route to Everest Base Camp. The trek commences from Lukla, a small town in Nepal's Khumbu region. After spending a day acclimatizing in Namche Bazaar, you will embark on a remarkable journey that will ultimately lead you to Gokyo Lake, offering breathtaking vistas of the Everest, Makalu, and Cho Oyo peaks from the summit of Gokyo Ri (5480m). The subsequent day, you will cross Chola Pass (5330m) and reach Dzongla. From there, your route proceeds to Gorakshep, where you will ascend to Kalapathar (5545m), affording you an awe-inspiring, up-close view of Mount Everest. Finally, you will trek to the legendary Everest Base Camp before your return journey takes you through Tyangboche, home to a renowned and picturesque monastery, where you can rest and savor the incredible views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Amadablam, Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Kangega, Mt. Kwangde, Mt. Nuptse, and more, before heading back to Lukla for your flight to Kathmandu.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Kathmandu – Lukla - Phakding (35 Minutes by Flight, 4 Hour Walk).

Early in the morning, take a flight to Lukla and trek to Phakding. The flight offers panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas. Following the flight, walk through Sherpa villages, lush vegetation, and high-altitude farms.

Day 2 : Phakding - Namche Bazaar (6 hours).

Cross several bridges over the Dudkosi river, pass through Jorsalle, and ascend to Namche Bazaar, a bustling town with various amenities and stunning views of Everest along the way. 


Day 3 : Rest Day at Namche Bazaar (Full Day).

Acclimatization day. Rest or explore nearby villages like Khumjung, Thomo, or Khunde above Namche Bazaar.

Day 4 : Namche - Dole (7 Hours).

After a slight climb from Namche, traverse along the mountainside with beautiful views and pass through Phortse Tenga. The walk offers encounters with wildlife and takes you above the tree line. 

Day 5 : Dole - Machharmo (4 Hours).

Trek through alpine meadows with yaks and highland birds, with views of Cho Oyu (8153m) in the north. Although it's a short walk, the altitude makes a stop at Machharmo necessary

Day 6 : Machharmo - Gokyo ( 4 hours).

Head north into the Dudkosi valley via Fanga. Pass waterfalls and the Gokyo lakes, including the first, second, and third lakes, before reaching Gokyo surrounded by mountains. 

Day 7 : Rest Day at Gokyo (Full Day).

Explore the area. Hike up Gokyo Ri (5483m) early in the morning for a 360-degree view, including Everest and Makalu. Later, explore the fifth lake and Nagjumba Glacier.

Day 8 : Gokyo - Dragnag ( 4 hours).

Return along the same path from Gokyo, then turn east over the Glacier for a short walk to Dragnag.

Day 9 : Dragnag - Cho La - Dzonglha (9 Hours).

This challenging day starts early with a packed lunch. You'll trek uphill, traverse boulders, and climb steeply to reach the Cho-La Pass, encountering ice and snow along the way. Descend to Dzonglha.

Day 10 : Dzonglha - Lobuche (5 Hours).

Walk southeast, then turn east-north with views of Pheriche and Dhugla to the south. Follow the Khumbu valley to reach Lobuche.

Day 11 : Lobuche – EBC - Gorakshep (9 Hours).

Trek alongside the Khumbu Glacier and spend time at Everest Base Camp before returning to Gorakshep.

Day 12 : Gorak Shep – Kalapathar (5550m) - Dingboche (7 Hours).

Wake up early to ascend Kalapathar for sunrise views of Everest, Nupse, Lhotse, Pumori, Khumbutse, and the Khumbu Glacier. Then, descend to Dingboche via Dhugla.

Day 13 : Dingboche – Chhukung ri (5600m) - Dingboche (Full Day).

Trek with a daypack to Chhukung and climb steeply to Chhukung Ri for a 360-degree view of the Himalayas before returning to Dingboche. 

Day 14 : Dingboche - Tengboche (6 Hours).

Descend from Dingboche, passing through Pangboche and then climb to Tengboche Monastery, a World Heritage Site.

Day 15 : Tengboche – Namche Bazaar (6 Hours).

Descend to Phunki Tenga, then climb back to Namche via Khumjung and Sansa, enjoying scenic views along the way. 


Day 16 : Namche Bazaar – Phakding (6 Hours).

Descend through pine forests, crossing several bridges over the Dudkosi River, and passing Sherpa villages. 


Day 17 : Phakding - Lukla (4 Hours).

Walk along the Dudkosi River, passing a couple of villages, and arrive in Lukla.

Day 18 : Lukla - Kathmandu (35 Minutes).

Fly back to Kathmandu in the morning and transfer to your hotel.
